Universal Healthcare Founders


Universal Healthcare was founded by a trio of healthcare industry experts, Dr Johan Pretorius, Chief Executive Officer; Catharina Sevillano-Barredo, Chief Financial Officer and Prof. Jan van der Merwe, Non-Executive Chairman.

Dr. Johan Pretorius

Dr Johan Pretorius, Chief Executive Officer: Universal Healthcare Dr Johan Pretorius graduated in Medicine and Business Administration, and has served at senior management and CEO level in the healthcare industry for close on 20 years. He has considerable industry experience garnered within some of the top healthcare companies in South Africa. He was a founding member and former Medical and Operations Director of Medicross Healthcare Group prior to serving as founder member and CEO of two clinical contract research organisations involved in new medicines development for the pharmaceutical industry. Both of these two organisations continue today as successful subsidiaries of multi-national organisations. Later Johan joined Prime Cure where he played a major role in the successful turnaround of the company. Johan is the CEO of Universal Healthcare, of which he was also the founder member in 2007.

Catharina Sevillano-Barredo

Mrs Catharina Sevillano-Barredo, Chief Financial Officer: Universal Healthcare Catharina Sevillano-Barredo is a chartered accountant and founder of Sevillano Hausmann and Associates, a corporate advisory business. She is a Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the audit committee of Distell, and formerly served on the audit committees of the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority. She is also a former Non-Executive Director of Wiphold and Concor, and established the international office of SAPPI in London. Catharina has a successful track record within the merchant banking and healthcare industry and has been key in some significant healthcare acquisitions in South Africa. Catharina is the Chief Financial Officer and a co-founder of Universal Healthcare.

Prof. Jan van der Merwe

Prof Jan van der Merwe, Non-Executive Chairman: Universal Healthcare Professor Jan van der Merwe is a renowned academic and industry expert, and holds a number of prominent honorary fellowships at an international level. He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Pretoria, and was a former Vice-President of the Health Professions Council of SA. He served on the Medicines Control and various other statutory councils in healthcare. He has published work in more than 80 authoritative local and international medical journals. More recently he was medical advisor to the Council for Medical Schemes. Jan is the Non-Executive Chairman and a co-founder of Universal Healthcare.
